John Lyly's Midas has often been seen as an allegorical attack on Philip II of Spain. Printed in 1592, the play was performed before Elizabeth I circa 1590. (1) It appeared at a period when anti-Spanish sentiment was at a peak in England--in the wake of the failure of the Armada, the Drake-Norris expedition to Portugal, and Drake's raids on Spanish shipping. According to this historical model, the Phrygian King's desire for gold allegorizes the gold coming in from Philip's mines in America; his abortive attempts to invade the island of Lesbos represent the Armada expedition. ...
