The riddle of Erskine Childers.

As is often the case with writers, Erskine Childers might have walked out of his timeless classic novel, The Riddle of the Sands, most convincingly as Arthur Davies, but to others maybe as Carruthers or Herr Dollman? Yachtsman, navigational map maker, writer of military history, strategy and tactics, soldier in the Boer War (1899) and volunteer in the Royal Navy Air Services (1914-1918). In politics he moved through the full spectrum, from Imperial Unionist, to Liberal, to Home Ruler and by the last years of his life, to uncompromising Irish Republican. No wonder earlier biographies…
