Yoga, or Western-style painter Ishii Hakutei predicted the creation of a 'Japanese painting' that is diverse in style, technique and subject matter. This forecast was based on his anticipation of the imminent blending of Eastern and Western art. Hakutei disapproved of the yoga-nihonga division and believed that Western art techniques would improve Japanese art by infusing technical mastery and respect for artistic creativity.
