The 1909 Ryuto and the aesthetics of affectivity.(Japan 1868-1945: Art, Architecture, and National Identity.)

The painting entitled 'Ryuto,' or Floating lanterns' by Japanese artist Yokoyama Taikan reveals the beginnings of Japan's pan-Asian imperialism by attempting to unify Indian and Japanese culture. It creates the illusion of a shared tradition by portraying three Indian women in a floating-lantern ceremony similar to the Buddhist ritual. Introduction of quasi-models such as 'Ryuto' would suggest to Japanese viewers of a Japanese-dominated Asia.
