For a U.S. beef cattle industry challenged by large supplies and a cost-price squeeze at home, world markets are lending a hand. Foreign demand for high-quality U.S. beef is booming, and the outlook is nothing but bullish.
In 1990, the United States shipped $1.6 billion worth of U.S. beef to all markets worldwide. By 1995, exports to Japan alone - the largest U.S. market - had topped that mark, reaching a record $1.7 billion. Total U.S. beef exports had climbed to more than $2.6 billion, up $1 billion since 1990 and 5 1/2 times the level of 1985.
