Michigan's educational system considers the charter school movement a bane. Charter schools, however, are contributing immensely to the renewal of public education through their creation of a public school system that fosters public sector competition and introduces market forces.

Outwardly, the establishment considers charter schools a thorn in its side, Mr. Goenner notes - but who knows? Someday this same establishment may silently thank the charter school movement for its own rebirth.
