The Catholic bishops will vote on the pope's plan for Catholic higher education in the US. The university officials have been able to keep bishops from directly hiring and firing faculty. The bishops believe that teachers of theological subjects should have a mandate from higher authorities.

At their annual meeting in November, U.S. Catholic bishops will vote on a plan for putting Pope John Paul II's apostolic constitution on higher education into effect in this country.
