Horace Newton Allen was the first Protestant resident missionary in Korea. He changed from having an evangelistic medical vocation to handling a diplomatic profession. He came to Korea in 1884 and was appointed by the king of Korea three years later as the secretary of the Korean legation in the US. Afterward he became the American minister and the consul general in Seoul.
