Decision-makers at the American Library Association foolishly shifted the annual conference from its original venue of Orlando to New York City in 1996, slipping it ever-so-inconveniently into a July 4-10 calendar slot. Most members and exhibitors merely grumbled, but some voted with their feet. Total attendance was down (14,773 for 1996, compared with 17,050 in Chicago in 1995).
