Israeli police have raised their alert after two days of clashes between Arabs and Jews in the northern city of Akko during the Jewish holiday of Yom Kippur.Calm returned to Akko, one of the few mixed cities in Israel, on Friday, but police said they were prepared in case the violence spread to other parts of the country.

"We have increased our forces in the city," Micky Rosenfeld, a police spokesman, said. Five hundred officers have been sent to assist the 200-strong local force."We have also raised our level of alert throughout the ...
