Alert to every cause for optimism, your Nation film scout has returned from a screening of Matilda with fresh hope for American cinema. True, most of this summer's releases passed across the screen like the nightmares of a downsized marketing exec--nothing but anxiety over money and outbursts of rage, dreamed out in copycat slogans. But those were the movies made for an adult audience, meaning ages 10 through 14. When our filmmakers conceive of something for the 6-year-old mind, the results can be wonderful. Hence my optimism.
