Bluegrass music lost its father Monday.

William Smith ``Bill'' Monroe, whose hardscrabble Kentucky childhood inspired the creation of bluegrass music in the 1940s, died at Northcrest Home and Hospice Center in Springfield, Tenn., at age 84. He had suffered a stroke earlier this year.

Friday would have been Monroe's 85th birthday.
