Many British social historians are convinced that the American right's attack on social history can be attributed to the workings of conservatives in the US government. Since research initiatives concerning social history are funded by the government, these conservatives believe that they have the right to interfere in the way historical facts are interpreted in textbooks and other forms of media. They also view themselves as protectors of the dominant culture whose ideologies may be compromised by negative interpretations in history books.
