The word "bargain" (59) in Robert Browning's poem requires explication.(1) Johannes Agricola, who is confined to a madhouse cell, is guilty only of protestantism. However, that is enough to make him a danger to society, because he believes that he has been foreordained - thanks to a primordial deal between God the Father and Christ - to be the impregnable proponent of what Andre Gide was later to call "the gratuitous act."
