The letter entitled, "Golden rod has been around CNY a long time" (Sept. 29) illustrates two common misconceptions.
First, that a goldenrod is a goldenrod is a goldenrod. There are many species of goldenrods in Central New York and around the country. To use the botanical name, they're all in the genus Solidago. The re-discovered goldenrod is seaside goldenrod. This particular species is called sempervirens to distinguish it from other types of goldenrod, so its full name is "Solidago sempervirens."
