There have been continued calls, including those from the editors of the National Catholic Reporter, for open dialogue within the various layers of the Catholic church with an aim to preventing the church from splintering. Honorable men are in the debates and the myth of bishop unity is dispelled.

A quick riffle through NCR editorial pages of the recent past reveals an almost nagging appeal for wider and more frequent discussion within the church.
