The title of this volume is a shade misleading, as the real focus of the study is on the understanding of troubadour poetry in its unique distinction and corporate achievement. The De amore is examined only in the opening chapter, to demonstrate that it represents a misunderstanding of courtly love; for Andreas was not a codifier but an interpreter, hostile to what he saw as the deceitfulness of courtly lovers.
