Recent empirical (Erlinge et al. 1983, 1984, Erlinge 1987, Korpimaki and Norrdahl 1989a, 1991a, b, Korpimaki et al. 1991) and theoretical studies (Ims and Steen 1990, Hanski et al. 1991) have suggested that, contrary to earlier viewpoints (e.g., Errington 1963), predators may play a critical role in the oscillatory dynamics of microtine rodents.
