People anticipate the type of medium they will use in reporting what they have learned and understood. An individual's view of a phenomenon is affected by the reporting medium in advance of the report itself. An analysis of a case involving a boy trying to understand a water wheel is presented to show the constructivist nature of understanding. The boy's struggle to know and to represent the water wheel fosters a dynamic system of knowledge construction.
