Ames Department Stores Inc is struggling to remain profitable and better compete with large discounters such as Target, Wal-Mart and Kmart in the mass market. Ames focuses on 'special buys' including canceled orders and closeouts and purchases fewer imported items to better control its inventory and operating cost. The company's 55 Gold program allows senior citizens to get 10% discount on all merchandise every Tuesday. Ames has adopted 'Bargains by the Bagful' as its marketing theme and will continue to offer merchandise at low prices to meet the needs of low- and middle-income customers.
