The Zionist labor movement and the Hebrew University.

Leaders of the Zionist Labor Movement supported the establishment and expansion of the Hebrew University of Jerusalem as a means of promoting scientific and technological research in the early years of Israel. PM David Ben-Gurion and Berl Katznelson recognized the need for education for national productivity despite their movement's emphasis on physical labor. However, Ben-Gurion also expected the school to engage in defense research and to solve state problems such as mass immigration.
