Secular universities in Israel, Turkey and the Arab nations pursued nationalist goals that were fulfilled by adopting the national language as the language for instruction. Thus, language was used to transmit cultural heritage, while religious institutions or groups are prevented from influencing the curriculum or the student population. Secularism has been more successful in Israel and Turkey than in Arab universities, where militant Islamic groups advocate the inclusion of Islamic teaching in the curriculum.
