The Hebrew University of Jerusalem was founded as a result of the desire of Jewish European intellectuals for an institution devoted to scientific and cultural research in the Jewish homeland. Their intentions conflicted with initial concerns for funding and staffing which by necessity depended on foreign support. At the same time, a curriculum had to be developed that would reflect Jewish identities from many nations as well as Zionist goals.
