New evidence has surfaced on a massive collapse of 62 dams on the Huai River drainage in Henan province, China, in Aug. 1975. The catastrophe left between 86,000-230,000 persons dead, but the government succeeded in suppressing coverage of the incident. The same symptoms of poor planning and management, government's apparent unconcern for public safety and neglect of environmental, social and technical concerns that precluded the tragedy are being seen in the Three Gorges project, which would erect the world's largest dam across the Yangtze River.
