MONTEREY, Calif. _ Call it the amazing undersea critter cam.

A team of researchers from San Jose State and Moss Landing Marine Laboratories think they've come up with a better way to study whales: Teach sea lions to swim alongside the whales _ and to follow when the huge mammals dive under water _ while carrying a video camera strapped to their backs.

And on a platform anchored 100 yards off shore from the Monterey Bay Aquarium, they're hoping to put their theory into practice.
