Identifying psychiatric disorders in persons with mental retardation: a model illustrated by depression in Down syndrome.

Depressive episodes occurring in individuals with Down syndrome indicate the need for specialized mental health services to treat the psychiatric disorders in persons with mental retardation (MR). Persons with MR have limited cognitive ability and neurobiological problems that raise difficulties in using standard psychiatric diagnostic methods. Mental health professionals in mental retardation need to be trained to better diagnose and treat individuals with mental retardation.
