Current trends in mental health care for persons with mental retardation.

The high incidence of mental health disorders in persons with mental retardation has resulted in various diagnostic and treatment approaches. The challenges to diagnostic approaches consist of psychiatric diagnoses of institutionalized persons with severe to profound mental retardation, and use of standardized diagnostic instruments to examine behavioral disorders among people with mental retardation. The treatment approaches include psychopharmacologic drug treatments, psychotherapy, group therapy and behavior management programs.
