At 3 a.m., the flight crews would rise. Breakfast would be simple: powdered eggs, bacon and all the coffee they could drink.

By 5 a.m. they would be ready for the day's flight briefing. It might be a ``long run'' to the Germany heartland, with 4,000 pounds of bombs stuffed into their B-17 bombers. Or maybe a shorter run, with less fuel and a larger bomb load, to German-occupied Norway or France.

Their bomber would have a crew of 10; 12 machine guns with 63,000 rounds of ammunition; and one of the most dangerous missions of World War II ahead of them.
