Convergence in the feeding apparatuses of lophophorates and pterobranch hemichordates revealed by 18S rDNA: an interpretation.

A phylogeny based on 18S rDNA was used to test the homology of the feeding apparatus of pterobranch hemichordates and the lophophore of bryozoans, brachiopods and phoronids. The putative homology was tested using Patterson's conjunction, similarity and congruence criteria. Results showed the failure of the three-criterion test, an outcome attributed to the evolution of a lophophore-like apparatus at least twice in metazoans.
