Maryse Conde and Isabel Allende: family saga novels.

From: World Literature Today | Date: March 22, 1996| Author: | Copyright information

Maryse Conde and Isabel Allende present in their writings the important role the family plays in restructuring the social order. This biological nucleus, despite and because of its flaws, offers itself as a dynamic point of departure from which a more inclusive social structure may be formed. Conde's 'Tree of Life' deconstructs genetic heritage mainly through its heroine, who is of mixed blood. Allende's 'House of Spirits' similarly presents the importance of accepting racial mixtures. Both books also present women as the ones who can restructure the family and, consequently, the society.
