Mozambique remains one of the poorest countries in the world but with the ongoing reconciliation and political reform, recovery may be in the offing. The country held its first multi-party elections in Oct. 1995 and newly-elected Pres. Joaquim Chissano is overseeing the integration of the two armies. Close trade relations with South Africa is also expected to have a positive impact on the economy. However, economic recovery will largely depend on the continuing flow of foreign aid to the country.
