Costas Simitis has written several books on modernizing Greece. As the new Prime Minister, he may have the chance to apply theory to practice. He sees closer ties to Europe as the best course to achieve this particular goal and is one of his priorities. His team consists mostly of Pasok's pro-Europeans, but he has also included his defeated opponents, Akis Tsochatzopoulos and Gerasimos Arsenis. His election has boosted confidence in Greece among foreign investors. The question of privatization, however, remains the most pressing domestic problem in his agenda.
