A substantial amount of knowledge regarding how Native Americans think can be gained by a careful examination of indigenous responses to foreign loan words. The theological concepts mask astonishing metaphysical ideas about the articulation of spiritual power. Analyzing the linguistic transpositions in the conversion of the Cherokees to the Christian religion is an example. Insights may be gained as to how equivalent Cherokee terms were found for God, heaven, Jesus Christ and other Christian concepts, and how indigenous peoples incorporated Christian beliefs into their own epistemological ...
