The Catawba Indians of South Carolina has successfully obtained federal recognition and benefits for their tribe and reservation. The Lumbee Indian tribe has been unsuccessful in its quest for the same recognition to date. It has been demonstrated that the external and internal social construction or identity of a tribe is what determines federal recognition. The Catawbas' distinctness has been accepted by the government and other tribes. The Lumbees' identity is nebulous and their recognition by other tribes and the government remains to be established.
