ALEX Salmond was last night looking increasingly isolated over the demise of HBOS, with his top adviser dismissing his claims it was brought down by 'spivs'.

Mr Salmond had said Halifax Bank of Scotland would have been saved in an independent Scotland and suggested the Treasury failed to act to prevent the short selling that brought about its collapse.

But it was revealed yesterday that economic adviser Sir George Mathewson heads a powerful hedge fund that sells shares 'short' on the markets and saw profits soar as the markets nosedived.
