The new South Africa celebrated its second birthday on April 27, 1996. We call the birthday of our now-democratic state, Freedom Day. And so it should be. South Africa has achieved freedom: freedom from oppression and freedom from discrimination, freedom from indignity and humiliation, freedom for all to play their part in selecting who shall govern over them, and freedom for anyone to participate in that government.
