William Holman Hunt's depiction of sheep grazing near a cliff overlooking the English Channel may have been influenced by British fears that they would be invaded by France in 1852. Hunt's painting was interpreted as a metaphor of the vulnerability of England in the face of foreign invasion since the French were portrayed and ridiculed elsewhere as imperialists. However, Hunt revised the interpretation of the work by retitling it "Strayed Sheep" in 1855.
