The organizers of the 1862 International Exhibition found difficulty in classifying photography since its products could not be clearly separated from the technology used. Lyon Playfair, who devised the taxonomical system for displaying products at the fair, was forced to concede that cameras were to be considered philosophical apparatus while photographs were to be displayed separately according to their use as illustration or mimetic art form.
