Gustave Courbet's painting "Still Life: Apples, Pears, and Primroses on a Table" may have been a personal attack on bourgeois sensibility. The painting is in a genre that seems to reaffirm but actually destabilizes traditional depictions of bourgeois comfort. Courbet's annotation on the back of the painting indicates that it was made at time when he was imprisoned for his involvement in a socialist uprising in 1871.
