The headlines in American newspapers read, "The British are coming. We are being invaded." It was 1964, but the invaders were not British soldiers carrying guns. The invaders were longhaired rock and rollers singing and playing guitars and drums. Leading the "British invasion" was The Beatles.

Several years earlier, guitarists John Lennon and Paul McCartney formed a band in Liverpool, England. They added another guitarist, George Harrison, and a drummer, Ringo Starr. The band had several names, but in August 1960 they settled on The Beatles.
