ATLANTA _ ``Whoever wins the 50 is the fastest man,'' Gary Hall Jr. was saying. ``I have a sacred place in my heart for it.''

It was late morning. The race against Russia's Alexander Popov, the defending Olympic champion, was still hours away. Hall spoke easily. His manner completely hid the highly-charged moment that was to come.

And it is that _ a moment. Almost a blink. One length of the pool _ no turns, no nonsense. A furious sprint. A winner crowned.
