Mainstreaming by confluence: the multilingual context of literature in South Africa.(South African Literature in Transition)

Two metaphors describe how South Africa's multilingual and multicultural communities may create a literary milieu that would nurture such multiplicity. First, South Africa's multiple identities may be likened to circles that intersect at different points. These points of intersection are the possible identities of South African literature. Second, South African literature may be visualized as a mainstream fed by tributaries. This means that no single language identifies the country's literature, but rather that several languages produce it.
