Hundreds of theology students in the holy city of Qom gathered recently at a local lecture hall for a seminar on the theory of money. Many had to sit in the street outside the hall, so popular was the subject in a city presumed to be reluctant to explore new ideas and obsessed with the trivia of Islamic ritual.
