A WAR of words has broken out about the level of opposition to the [pounds sterling]185m second Tyne Tunnel scheme.

Green Party officials say many people in Jarrow remain fiercely opposed to the scheme.

Environmental campaigners also claim the new Tyne crossing is in direct opposition to official Government transport thinking on tackling climate change.

But Coun Tom Hanson, a Jarrow member and vice-chairman of Tyne and Wear Passenger Transport Authority (PTA) slammed the Green Party's comments as "mischievous," claiming there is overwhelming support for the new road ...
