Aphra Behn's posthumously published tragicomedy that dramatizes the story of the rebellion of Nathaniel Bacon against the governor of Virginia in 1676 depicts the title character as a strong-willed, independent woman, often dressing in breeches. Although Ranter is the title character, she is neither the central character nor the primary focus of the play.
