Sucrose is not recommended as an analgesic during heel lances for glucose monitoring in newborns of diabetic mothers, or during the newborn intramuscular injection of vitamin K, based on results from a study of 240 newborns of at least 36 weeks' gestation.
However, sucrose is recommended for reducing pain during venipuncture for the newborn screening test.
