Observing where people go fishing for recreation in Monterey Bay and keeping track of what they catch gives an indicator of the bay's fish stocks. Blue rockfish is the most common catch, and when it is in short supply, commercial and private sport anglers try farther offshore or look for deep water near the coast. The total sport-fishing catch fluctuated between 1959 and 1986, reaching 500,000 in 1981 and 1982. Detailed historic data are presented.
