Richard Wilbur's "Walking to Sleep" shows his rejection and invocation of Poe, Wordsworth, Frost, Eliot and Stevens. Poe's aesthetics contrasts with Wilbur's reality. Wilbur designs the imagination to have lost faith in its power to organize the world, Frost directs the guide in his poem, "Directive," through a stable landscape. Eliot's "The Waste Land" exhibits clear imagery which becomes chaotic in Wilbur's poem.
