Opium cultivation down by a fifth in Afghanistan.

TASHKENT, August 27 (UzReport.com): At a press conference in Kabul today, the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) issued its summary of the Afghanistan Opium Survey 2008. The report shows a 19 per cent decrease in opium cultivation to 157,000 hectares, down from a record harvest of 193,000 in 2007. Because of a higher yield of 48.8 kg/ha (up from 42.5 kg in 2007), opium production has dropped less dramatically, down 6 per cent from 8,200 to 7,700. Flood waters receding?
