Jasper Johns' 1958 collage painting 'Alley Oop' is an exploration of how medium can be presented directly to the viewer without the intervening characteristics of narrative, representation or expression. Johns work is composed of an episode of a comic strip that was pasted on a piece of cardboard and then covered with oil paint. The paint renders the figures into simplified forms and blurs of color so that the viewer is immediately drawn into contemplating the colors and patterns.

Capital (Annapolis)
; Readers are certainly loyal to their favorite comic strips - it's too bad they can't agree among themselves which ones to be loyal to. After tabulating about 1,000 responses to a poll on our comic strips - intended to show us how to overhaul our Sunday comics section - I have concluded that the

FINALLY, AN END TO ALLEY OOP.(EDITORIAL)(Letter to the Editor)
